Sustainability

Rail’s key competitive advantage is in moving large volumes of freight over medium to long distances.

Rail has a sustainable competitive advantage for the transport of bulk products due to the large tonnages carried and the specialized nature of loading and unloading activities using rail-based infrastructure. From an operating cost perspective, rail freight consumes less fuel per tonne kilometer compared to road.

The rail corridor and Darwin Port (to which FreightLink has direct access) are Australia’s least congested and distanced from urban areas. The Alice Springs–Darwin track, in particular, is recognised for its high quality, maximising fuel efficiency with low track grades and minimal alignment changes.

FreightLink is committed to undertaking its business operations in a manner that recognizes the importance of environmental protection and sustainability, and it pursues business in a way that protects the environment so that community living standards are maintained and environmental heritage is preserved.

Further, FreightLink has signed the Australian Government’s Department of the Environment and Water Resources cooperative agreement, under which FreightLink, as a Greenhouse Challenge Plus member, agrees to put in place appropriate, practical and cost-effective actions to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and encourage staff and other stakeholders to implement similar measures.
